The Typography of Silence

Type is the voice of words. In most apps, the typography is utilitarian—designed for maximum scanning speed. But reading for insight is different from reading for information.

Inter & Noto Serif

We chose Inter for the UI because it is invisible. It doesn't have a personality; it is pure signal. For the actual writing, we use Noto Serif SC. It has roots in history. It has serifs that guide the eye horizontally, promoting a longer, more rhythmic reading flow.

"Good typography is like a crystal goblet. You don't look at it; you look through it at the wine." — Beatrice Warde

We tweaked the letter-spacing to be slightly wider than standard. This introduces micro-silences between letters, slowing down your reading speed just enough to increase comprehension.
